Five of the 10 best selling cars from 2004 have been replaced with their corresponding 2014 models - while the top three sellers are the same, albeit in a different order.

But French cars have fallen distinctly out of favour with British buyers and Mondeo Man has drifted out of the top ten - replaced by Qashqai dad perhaps. 




Racing ahead: New car sales are set to be at their highest level since 2004



 

The Ford Focus, Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa retain the top positions (see full list below), while the VW Golf and Vauxhall Astra keep their place in the list.

There is a complete absence of French cars from the 2014 top ten. This is notable as four of the ten best sellers from 2004 were French.

According to the SMMT, mini and supermini motors accounted for 34 per cent of sales in 2004. Today, this is nearer 40 per cent, as motorists look for better fuel economy and cheaper insurance costs. 

The statistics reveal a shift in fuel type. There were 835,334 diesel registrations in 2004 compared to 1,731,935 petrol ones. 

Today, sales of diesel have overtaken unleaded motors, with 1,067,425 diesel cars shifted so far this year, compared to 1,027,951 petrol ones.

Also, SMMT data shows a decade ago, 36 per cent of new cars were silver. However, this year, white is the top colour, with 22 per cent drivers picking it.
